Advanced Vancouver Island Winter Mountain Skills.

 

This 5 day course caters to the Island Ski Tourer who is looking to gain the skills and knowledge to travel efficiently and safely through our island terrain in the winter.  Vancouver Island Mountains are unique in snowpack and topography which require the backcountry traveler to be well versed in route finding, navigation, rope management and avalanche hazard evaluation.  This course will cover skills such as Avalanche hazard management, Rope management including protecting, belaying and lowering.  Crevasse rescue skills and white out navigation.  

Our location is chosen closer to the date of the trip to adjust for avalanche conditions, weather and travel conditions.  Possible venues include; Augerpoint Traverse, Cliffe Glacier, Mt. Myra/Thelwood, Bedwell/Septimus area.

This is an advanced level course and the participant should be familar with common climbing knots, hold a minimum AST 1 certificate and be comfortable traveling for extended days in a backcountry winter environment.

 

Included in the price: Instructor, group technical gear, Avaluator Card.

Not included: Transportation, food, tents and personal clothing and equipment (list supplied on booking). Transport, food and tenting logistics will be organized between participants and IAG. Optional catering of three meals per day can be provided by IAG for a cost of $40/person/day

Basic Glacier Ski Touring Course

Take your ski touring to the next level by learning all about skiing in glaciated terrain. Glacier formation, route finding, roping for glacier travel and crevasse rescue are all covered in this 3 day course which takes place in the spectacular Spearhead Range. This trip is off Island to take advantage of the heavily crevassed terrain in the Coast Mountains.

Included in the price: Instructor, use of harness transceiver, shovel, probe and group technical gear.

Dates:

TBA for 2010/2011

Price: $395 per person, Includes backcountry pass for Blackcomb Mountai

Not included in the price: Transportation, food, tents and personal clothing and equipment (list supplied on booking). Winter Skills2

 

Advanced Glacier Ski Touring Course

Our advanced course takes the skills covered in our Basic Glacier Course and adds avalanche terrain and hazard management into the mix. This is the perfect course to prep you for mountain trips into complex terrain. 5 days in a glaciated mountain setting with our super experienced guides will load you up with a whole lot of skills to take into your next winter mountain adventure.

 

This trip is off Island to take advantage of the heavily crevassed terrain in the Coast Mountains.

Intro to Winter Mountain Travel

Looking to get into the mountains in winter time? This course will get you started with the basics of gear choice, how to put all that nice gear to use in the back country and how to move through and spent a night in the winter mountain environment. This 2 day course will help you make that 1st step into the winter backcountry

Included in the price: Guide, transceiver, shovel, probe and group technical gear.

 Price: $270 per person (4:1 ratio
